Here’s a quick warning\u2014a lot of that dating advice is outdated<\/a> and will steer you in the wrong direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help you separate the good from the bad, here are some senior dating tips you should ignore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online dating is only for younger people.<\/strong>
\n\u201cThe media today paints online dating as something only young people do as if anyone over 50 doesn\u2019t crave affection or companionship,” says Mary J. Gibson, relationship expert at DatingXp. “Nowadays, you can find many matching services and dating apps catered towards older people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let them chase you.<\/strong>
\nWhile the chase (aka the conquest and eventual conquering of a partner) might have made up a large part of your younger dating life, senior dating should avoid this mentality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough it\u2019s true that there\u2019s nothing wrong with living like you\u2019re young, the fact of the matter is that you become more aware what you do and do not want as you age, and shouldn\u2019t waste time on mixed signals, miscommunication, and the so-called fun of not knowing where a relationship is heading,\u201d says relationship expert, Adina Mahalli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Act your age.<\/strong>
\n\u201cRemember your first ever date as a teenager? How you had butterflies in your stomach? Chances are, you will feel the same again, no matter your age,” says Gibson. “So, don\u2019t act your age. If you\u2019re feeling excited, let it show. Chances are, your date may feel the same too.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar pasts make for a better date.<\/strong>
\n\u201cMore often than not you will hear someone setting their older friends up by saying ‘Oh, they lost their husband\/wife a while ago too,\u201d says Gibson. \u201cA common tragedy doesn\u2019t equate to chemistry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have to keep up with the times and be hip for other people to like you.<\/strong>
\nYou shouldn\u2019t push your body to the limit just to keep up, and you don’t have to pretend to be something you aren’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSimilarly, you don\u2019t have to dress up any differently just to please other people. If you want to try out something new for yourself, that\u2019s cool,” says Celia Schweyer, a dating expert with Dating Scout. “But you don\u2019t have to do that if you’re only doing so to gain the approval of others. Be you and if the person is genuinely interested in you, they\u2019ll like the real you and not the curated version of you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re too old to date.<\/strong>
\n\u201cDon\u2019t ever think that you’re too old for love,\u201d says Schweyer. \u201cEverybody deserves to love and be loved; everybody deserves their second, third, nth shot to find a new long-lasting relationship. You are never too old to seek out the love and companionship you know you deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t bond over baggage.<\/strong>
\nSenior dating often comes with a whole host of baggage; you\u2019ve both had tons of life experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t listen to people who tell you not to bond over your baggage with your date,\u201d says Mahalli. \u201cBaggage bonding can be a healthy and real way for two people to empathize with each other and grow closer. This shouldn\u2019t replace therapy where necessary, but bonding over your life experiences with another person is never a bad thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re online dating, you should reply to everyone who messages you. <\/strong>
\nNo dater should follow this rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou are not obliged to reply to every single message you receive. You have the freedom to reply to whoever piques your interest and to the profiles you are attracted to,\u201d says Schweyer. \u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s good in online dating\u2014You can simply leave them be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t be picky.<\/strong>
\nEverybody has the right to be picky. You don\u2019t have to jump at the first one who shows you interest, especially when they\u2019re not your type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay to follow a standard and be picky when it comes to dating, even at your age,”says Schweyer. “Make your yes and no lists, and know your non-negotiables, then follow them and you won\u2019t regret it.
