Self-love is the best love. It\u2019s something we\u2019ve been hearing a lot lately. And for good reason! Though learning to love yourself<\/a> might seem like a daunting challenge, it\u2019s easy to get there. We\u2019re living through an era in which self-love is arguably more important than ever. It\u2019s time to understand why. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is Self-Love? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to Psych Central<\/a>, \u201cSelf-love means that you accept yourself fully, treat yourself with kindness and respect, and nurture your growth and wellbeing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, self-love means you respect yourself. You are kind to yourself. You are focused on your personal growth, health, and mentality. PsychCentral goes on to say that self-love is also about how you think and feel about yourself. If you wouldn\u2019t say it to your best friend, don\u2019t say it to yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding Why Self-Love Is the Best Love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now that we have the basics, let\u2019s try to understand why self-love is the best love. Largely, it stems from the fact that if you don\u2019t love and respect yourself, it\u2019s hard to fully share yourself with someone else. Ideally in a relationship, both sides are continually working on this because it might slip away at times. Yes, guys, self-love is for you too<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like most other things in life, loving yourself should be practiced on an ongoing basis and isn\u2019t something that can be checked off your list once it\u2019s \u2018done\u2019. It\u2019s fluid. But, how do you practice self-love? Below, we\u2019ve put together our top five suggestions to help you get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practice mindfulness <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mindfulness is a bit of a buzzword these days. But it\u2019s an important part of why self-love is the best love. Mindfulness means being aware and in tune with yourself and knowing what you think, feel, and want. How can you practice mindfulness? Check out an app like Headspace<\/a> or search for meditation instructions online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accept yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admittedly, this is easier said than done. But, one of the greatest ways to practice loving yourself is to acknowledge your imperfections. None of us are perfect and accepting this will go a long way when it comes to loving yourself. Maybe you feel frustrated too quickly and that bothers you? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of resenting yourself for it, work on it. Work on accepting that you have some hotheadedness to deal with, figure out where it stems from and how to tackle it, and love yourself anyway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spend time with yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can be hard to focus on yourself if you never have the time to do so. And, hearing that self-love is the best love can be frustrating if you feel like you don\u2019t have time to practice it. Regardless of how busy you are, it\u2019s vital to find time for yourself. Even if you can only manage five minutes of alone time a day, start there. Reflect. Don\u2019t do it all alone<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though the word self<\/em> implies that this is all on you, it\u2019s not. Asking for help is a key part. One of the best things you can do is ask for someone to help shoulder your load. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it\u2019s a colleague at work who can take some tasks off your plate or your teenager at home helping to clean the kitchen, just ask. The more others help you out, the more time you have to focus on yourself. (See above!) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Self-care is key<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Self-care is another much-used buzzword. There\u2019s good reason for this though. Self-care is a phrase coined by writer Audre Lorde, who once said, \u201ccaring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.\u201d To get comfortable with self-care, realize that you\u2019re not indulging, you\u2019re preserving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If running every morning makes you feel your best, do it. If reading frees and clears your mind, make time to read. If you want to put on loud music and do a vigorous workout, go for it! Care for yourself and in time you\u2019ll realize you\u2019re worthy of love, even from yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start Focusing on Yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Self-love is the best love because when you wholly and fully trust yourself, you\u2019ll be at your best. Life fluctuates and a lot of things happen that are entirely out of our control. But this is okay. It just means that it’ll be a continual process throughout your life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And remember, when practicing self-love feels like an impossible task, use the resources around you.
