10 Indoor Date Ideas When It’s Too Cold to Go Out

When it’s freezing outside, the last thing you want to do is leave the house. But after a while, staying in can get a little boring. Don’t get me wrong—I love binging Netflix or reading a book cozied up under some soft blankets—but eventually, cabin fever sets in, and you have to get some fresh air (not to mention have some fun with your partner). That’s when these indoor date ideas will come in handy.

1. Make a reservation at a new restaurant.
Been itching to try that new tapas spot in your neighborhood? Or have you been craving tacos? A dinner date is a simple and fun way to get out of the house when it’s cold. To spice things up, instead of going to your usual spot, adventure somewhere new. It’ll make the date feel special and add a little more reason to brave the cold.

2. Attempt an escape room.
Whether you’re a master escapist or can barely escape your own bed in the morning, an escape room is a great way to bond with your date or partner. Searching for clues and solving riddles will take your mind off anything except the task at hand. That includes the cold.

3. Paint some pottery.
Monogram a coffee mug, decorate a cute candy dish, or personalize a piggy bank. Let your creativity run wild! If you’re feeling extra adventurous, look up a nearby ceramics class and learn how to throw your own pot.

4. Spend the day at the spa.
Spending too much time indoors can be stressful, and it’s no secret that the winter air can be hard on your skin. Treat yourself to a day of pampering at the spa complete with a facial, a couple’s massage, and a soak or sauna.

5. Do something outdoorsy, but indoors.
What’s your favorite outdoor activity? Chances are, you can probably find a way to do it indoors. Head to your local fitness center to go rock climbing, cycling, or swim laps. Working up a sweat always feels good especially during the winter months.

6. Go bowling.
Don’t forget to wear fun socks to go with your bowling shoes. And yes, you’re totally allowed to ask for bumpers. We’re not judging.

7. Take a trip to a winery.
Cure the winter blues by sipping on some reds, whites, and pinks. Bonus points if you order the cheese plate, and even more bonus points if you make up silly wine tasting notes as you go.

8. Shop for each other.
Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to buy a shirt, book, or small household trinket that the other would love. At the end of the date, exchange gifts and see how you did!

9. Take a train ride.
If you live near an Amtrak station, plan a fun day (or overnight) trip with your sweetheart. With this one, it’s all about the journey, not the destination. Often we’re so focused on the cold, we forget the beauty the winter months can bring with its snowy woods and quiet landscapes.

10. Volunteer and make a difference.
Call your local food bank, shelter, or nursing home to see how you can lend a hand. It can be especially difficult to find help during the colder months, and there are always those in need. They’ll appreciate your time, and it doesn’t cost you anything.

The next time you need to get out of the house with your partner, try one of these indoor date ideas. Don’t worry: your sweats will still be waiting when you get back.
