3 Alternatives to Cheesy Pick-Up Lines

A man using a cheesy pick up line. We give you alternatives.

Although there’s no scientific proof, we all know that pick-up lines are usually a disaster. Unless you’re the type of person who can use a pick-up line in a way that it’s completely a joke, as in you know it’s just awful and you’re making fun of it for being so awful, pick-up lines should be avoided at all costs.

Here are better ways to talk to women:

1. Introduce yourself. It might seem boring, but introducing yourself is a great way to start a conversation. If you can follow up your name with a question, you’ll move into conversation.

2. Make small talk. Yes, no one likes small talk, but it can be used to your advantage in these situations. When you mention the weather, ask the time, or say something along the lines of, “So, how about those Red Sox,” it’s basically code. What you’re really saying with that small talk is “I don’t have the nerve to introduce myself so I’m going to ask you the time then cross my fingers.” Most people will pick up what you’re putting down, and if they’re interested, too, they’ll give you a break.

3. Ask for advice. Similarly to making small talk, this is a perfect way to initiate conversation. Ask someone what to order at the cafe or where you should go on vacation. People like to feel helpful. They also like to talk about themselves, so asking for an opinion helps that people talk about their experiences and expertise.
